In less than 20 minutes, a squirrel stole over 200 black walnuts that we intended to plant strategically as part of an attempted food forest project. If you could scale this up to launch groundhogs, and somehow incorporate a self-resetting mechanism this could become something big! Of course, I should think about owls, considering the raccoon population of the city I live in. It will offer them a spectacular view of my raised bed garden in the back yard, and all the squirrels they can pluck from the mulberry trees and garage roof peaks. I am also building a perch for the local hawks on a pole about six to eight feet above my third-floor bedroom window balcony garden, with an appropriate perch profile and wrapping. I am currently trying to brainstorm a way to cast a moving hawk shadow, probably a silhouette pinned to a motorised clothesline activated by motion sensor, but first I think I am going to try an outdoor speaker and motion sensor setup, with the speaker playing a hawk shriek any time the sensor is triggered. On a serious note, are there any guardian animals that squirrels do take seriously? I mean, they disappear whenever the Red-Tailed Hawks soar by, and I know that they are preyed upon, as I have seen, on many occasions, Red-Tailed Hawks munching on squirrel perched atop electrical poles. aaaaaa wrote a comment on ARMAWATCH & ARMACHAT - long range radio messengers. Is it bad that I want to see video of the Squirrel Electric Slide? Just be careful, and watch where you shoot that thing before you put somebody’s eye out, ok? ’s impressive project and presentation makes it clear that all one has to do to build a supersonic trebuchet is to try. There’s a very satisfying montage of full power trebuchet launches that make it audibly clear that the projectile being thrown is going well past the speed of sound, with a report quite similar to that of a small rifle. ’s video explains in full all of the engineering that went into his trebuchet, and it’s a lot less than you’d think. How fast is fast? How about a whip-cracking, sonic-booming speed in excess of 450 meters per second! How’d he do it? Mostly wood and rubber with some metal bits thrown in for safety’s sake. But of course you’re here to read about the other thing that trebuchets can be used for: speed. The focus has typically been on increasing throwing distance for the size of the projectile, or vice versa. Trebuchets use a long arm to throw projectiles farther than traditional catapults. The trebuchet is a type of catapult that was popular for use as a siege engine before gunpowder became a thing. He didn’t just ask the question, he answered it! And he documented the entire build in a YouTube video which you can see below the break. That’s what separates from the rest of us. Have you ever sat down and thought “I wonder if a trebuchet could launch a projectile at supersonic speeds?” Neither have we.
